cooking off and on for a long time. \u00a0But I've been doing it in earnest the last 10 years. \u00a0I've almost always owned some type of grill, but got my first smoker about 8 years ago and my first Dutch oven about 12 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>While I've still got tons to learn, I've got some things that I think I've learned and work for me. \u00a0It's not everything, to be sure, but this list is a good start.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What I learned<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Greasing grill grates keeps meat from sticking.<\/li>\n<li>A small pat of butter on a steak while it's resting adds great flavor.<\/li>\n<li>You can add a smoky flavor to your grilling by putting wood chips in a aluminum foil pouch with some small tears on the grill.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5315 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Wood-Chip-Foil-Package.jpg\" alt=\"Wood Chip Foil Package\" width=\"379\" height=\"213\" your thumb in your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/10-tips-grilling-delicious-hamburgers\/\">burger <\/a>before you put them on the grill.<\/li>\n<li>Mixing some bacon grease with your hamburger will give them some great flavor.<\/li>\n<li>Put two ice cubes in your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/12-ways-to-spice-up-foil-dinners\/\">foil dinner<\/a> to add some extra moisture and provide some insurance against burning.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/grilled-hot-dogs-american-tradition\/\">Hot dogs can be even better with some creative toppings.<br \/>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/brining-a-turkey\/\">Brining poultry<\/a> gives it an unbelievable flavor and tenderness.<\/li>\n<li>Don't put the barbecue sauce on the meat until the last 10 minutes on the grill.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/i-love-barbecued-ribs\/\">The 3-2-1 rib formula works great.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Using a thermometer lets you grill your meat exactly as you like it.<\/li>\n<li>Veggies are delicious on the grill, but they need a little oil and seasonings.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/grilled-asparagus\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2216\" fluid to light your charcoal. \u00a0It will give your food a flavor that you don't want.<\/li>\n<li>Lump charcoal can give some smoky flavor to your grilling.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" use foil more much more than foil dinners<\/li>\n<li>Prep all your food inside before you take it outside to cook.<\/li>\n<li>There are many ways to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/six-easy-ways-add-flavor-grilling\/\"> add flavoring<\/a> to what you throw on the grill. \u00a0Using several of them really bumps up your grilling.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/jamaican-pork-chops-tropical-fruit-salsa\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4727\" mustard before putting the rub on. \u00a0It will help tenderize and give the rub something extra to stick to.<\/li>\n<li>Yes, remove the membrane from ribs.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/i-love-barbecued-ribs\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4692\" src=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Remove-Pork-Rib-Membrane.jpg\" alt=\"Remove Pork Rib Membrane\" width=\"392\" height=\"261\" during grilling--you'll just squeeze out some of the juices.<\/li>\n<li>Veggies are delicious on the grill--don't forget to try them.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
