{"id":3817,"date":"2012-06-05T04:24:32","date_gmt":"2012-06-05T11:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/?p=3817"},"modified":"2014-06-29T22:31:15","modified_gmt":"2014-06-30T05:31:15","slug":"northern-mixed-vegetables-outdoor-cooking-magic-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/northern-mixed-vegetables-outdoor-cooking-magic-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Mixed Vegetables &#8211; Outdoor Cooking Magic Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3845\" title=\"Northern Mixed Vegetables\" src=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/northern-mixed-vegetables-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Northern Mixed Vegetables\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/northern-mixed-vegetables-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/northern-mixed-vegetables.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also decided to try this dish two ways: dutch oven and on the grill. \u00a0I expected the Dutch oven recipe to be the better one, since cooking in a Dutch oven is pretty easy. \u00a0Doing stir fry on a grill? \u00a0That should be hard, but actually it wasn't too bad.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>The Grill Method<\/h3>\n<p>To cook on the grill, I put a sheet of aluminum foil down on the grill, with a little bit of oil, heated it, and then added the minced garlic to brown. \u00a0After that was done, I moved the sheet to the upper rack of the grill and cooked the veggies in a vegetable basket until they were just starting to char.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"float:right;margin:3px\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"src=\"http:\/\/ap.lijit.com\/www\/delivery\/fpi.js?z=262584&u=outdoorcook&width=300&height=250\"><\/script><\/div>Then I put the veggies into the foil that had the garlic, added the green onions and stir fry sauce, and then sealed up the foil package. \u00a0I added another layer of foil for good measure and then put on the grill to cook. \u00a0I turned in a few times, keeping the heat up and after about 20 minutes, checked the foil packet and the dish was done.<\/p>\n<h3>The Dutch Oven Method<\/h3>\n<p>The Dutch oven method was similar, except that I didn't use foil and cooked everything in the Dutch oven. \u00a0I first sauteed the garlic, the added all the vegetables and cooked them until done. \u00a0I added the green onions and stir fry sauce. My flaw was to leave the lid on. \u00a0It kept some of the liquid that cooked out of the cabbage from evaporating, and that led to a fairly thin sauce. \u00a0I actually had to add some additional thickening to the dish.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, we preferred the grilled veggies over the Dutch oven veggies. \u00a0That's not what I had expected. \u00a0But I think the added heat of the grill brought out some additional flavor that was missing with the Dutch oven.<\/p>\n<p>The final recipe for the winner:<\/p>\n<div class=\"easyrecipe\">\n<table class=\"ERHDTable\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span class=\"item ERName\"><span class=\"fn\">Grilled Northern Mixed Vegetables<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\" valign=\"top\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div class=\"ERClear\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ERHead\">Recipe Type: <span class=\"tag\">Entree<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ERHead\">Prep time: <span class=\"preptime\">10 mins<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ERHead\">Cook time: <span class=\"cooktime\">25 mins<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ERHead\">Total time: <span class=\"duration\">35 mins<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ERSummary\"><span class=\"summary\">This is a Chinese vegetable stir fry dish. I cooked it on the grill and in a Dutch oven. The grilled version was best!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ERIngredients\">\n<div class=\"ERIngredientsHeader\">Ingredients<\/div>\n<ul class=\"ingredients\">\n<li class=\"ingredient\">4 garlic cloves, crushed<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 (4 oz) can baby corn, drained<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 lb. Chinese cabbage<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 cup carrots, julienned<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 bunch green onions, cut into 1-2\" pieces<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 (4 oz) can sliced mushrooms, drained<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 (4 oz) can sliced bamboo shoots, drained<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 (4 oz) can sliced water chestnuts, drained<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 tsp salt<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/4 tsp sugar<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/4 cup chicken broth<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/4 cup water<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 tsp cornstarch<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/4 tsp pepper<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">5 tbsp vegetable oil<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1 tsp sesame oil<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">4 garlic cloves, crushed<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 (4 oz) can baby corn, drained<\/li>\n<li class=\"ingredient\">1\/2 lb. Set aside.<\/li>\n<li class=\"instruction\">Stir fry the garlic in a tablespoon of oil on a foil sheet laid down on the grill rack.
