{"id":3630,"date":"2014-01-29T21:54:30","date_gmt":"2014-01-30T04:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/?p=3630"},"modified":"2014-06-29T22:12:23","modified_gmt":"2014-06-30T05:12:23","slug":"grilled-salmon-cedar-planks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/grilled-salmon-cedar-planks\/","title":{"rendered":"Grilled Salmon on Cedar Planks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"float:right;margin:3px\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"src=\"http:\/\/ap.lijit.com\/www\/delivery\/fpi.js?z=262584&u=outdoorcook&width=300&height=250\"><\/script><\/div>If you haven't tried planking (and I don't mean the kind of planking that the young people do :), it's an outdoor cooking technique that can give your meals a WONDERFUL flavor. \u00a0While salmon is a popular choice for grilling on cedar planks, you can also grill boneless chicken breasts or thighs, as well as vegetables, hamburgers, and much more. \u00a0Grilled salmon on planks is especially delicious and is so easy to do. \u00a0Imagine the surprise of your guests when you serve them some delicious salmon right on a cedar plank! \u00a0Talk about being an<a title=\"Outdoor Cooking Magic Tricks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/outdoor-cooking\/\"> outdoor cooking rock star<\/a>!<!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>Grilled Salmon on Planks<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/grilled-salmon-on-plank.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4596\" src=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/grilled-salmon-on-plank-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Grilled Salmon on Cedar Plank\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/grilled-salmon-on-plank-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/grilled-salmon-on-plank.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Cooking salmon on a plank was first done by the Indians of the Pacific Northwest. \u00a0They fastened salmon onto planks of cedar and then propped the plank up close to the fire. \u00a0You can do it in a similar way, except you'll put the plank of cedar right down on your grill and put a fillet of salmon on top of it.<\/p>\n<p>To get started, you'll need a cedar plank, a fillet of salmon, and, if you desire, some seasonings. \u00a0You might be able to find cedar planks for grilling in your local stores, you can also get them\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cedar-Grill-Plank-Set-6\/dp\/B000QXLN1G\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=outdoorcookingmagic-20\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"magic\" style=\"float:right;border:8px solid #506637;margin:5px;padding:1px 5px 5px 5px;width:200px;\"><h3 style=\"font-size:150%;font-weight:900;padding-bottom:5px;margin-top:3px;\">The Magic...<\/h3>One way to save time is to presoak your planks and then store them in your freezer.  They'll be ready when you need them!<br><br>Click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/magictricks\">here<\/a> for more magic!<\/div>The first thing you'll need to do is get your planks soaking. \u00a0They'll need a good hour, so make sure you allow enough time. \u00a0I used a cooler, since the planks can be 13 to 15 inches long and the cooler was long enough. \u00a0I added a few inches of water, and put the planks in with something on top to hold them down. \u00a0I used an empty Gatorade bottle filled with water. \u00a0If you want to get fancy, add some apple juice, or other liquid to the water for extra flavor!<\/p>\n<p>While your planks are soaking, you can get your seasonings ready. \u00a0You don't have to be exotic with the seasonings--some simple coarse salt, freshly ground pepper, and some freshly squeezed lemon juice will do just fine. \u00a0But if you want to sample something a bit fancier, try this rub that I used:<\/p>\n<p>Mix the following in a bowl.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1\/2 tbsp brown sugar<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 tbsp coarse salt<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp chili powder<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 tsp cumin<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 tsp black pepper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After mixing, rub this mix all over the filet of salmon.<\/p>\n<p>When you are ready to start cooking, get your grill heated up to 350 degrees. \u00a0Put the planks on the grill. \u00a0If you purchased the plank, there should be a smooth side and a rough side--put the smooth\u00a0side down. Now close the lid to your grill and let the plank heat up. \u00a0This should take no more than a couple of minutes. \u00a0Don't leave while you are doing this! \u00a0You'll end up with a pile of ashes. \u00a0When the plank starts to smoke and crack, it's done.<\/p>\n<p>Use a pair of tongs to flip the plank over and brush the top side with a light coating of olive oil. \u00a0This will help keep the fish from sticking to the plank. \u00a0Put the salmon fillet on the plank. \u00a0If the fillet is too wide, trim it and lay the trimmed pieces on the plank to cook. \u00a0You'll have an extra treat when all is done!<\/p>\n<p>Now you want to turn down the flame of the grill burners to the lowest setting and close the cover. \u00a0Let the salmon cook for 8 minutes. \u00a0Please don't open the grill during this period to check! \u00a0You'll just lose all that delicious cedar smoky flavor and you definitely don't want that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/grilled-salmon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4595\" src=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/grilled-salmon-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"grilled salmon\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/grilled-salmon-300x222.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.outdoorcookingmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/grilled-salmon.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>At the end of the 8 minutes, open the grill and check your salmon. \u00a0Hopefully the plank is not burning! \u00a0If it is, use a spray bottle of water to put\u00a0the flames out. \u00a0You need to continue to grill the salmon until it is flaky. \u00a0That usually takes about 12 -15 minutes, but will depend on the temperature of your grill.
